Strategic Planning for BC’s wilderness

Lush landscapes, endless mountains, rainforests and deserts, British Columbia has it all. The Federation of Mountain Clubs of British Columbia (FMCBC) makes it possible for residents and visitors to access and enjoy BC’s wilderness.  In 2024 FMCBC refreshed their multi-year strategy in collaboration with Roots & Rivers consulting, who invited me, as strategist and outdoor enthusiast, to team up.

As a province-wide umbrella organization the FMCBC represents the interests of 54 outdoor clubs from all over British Columbia. They have been a united voice to protect and maintain public, non-motorized access to BC’s trails and backcountry for over 50 years. The Strategic Planning process that Roots & Rivers co-designed made space for these various perspectives and long-term experience, by including FMCBC staff and board, as well as present and past members. R&R’s ways of working align well with my own, as we both center co-creation to establish valuable results and a sense of ownership. As a part of the Strategic Planning team, I helped to:

Gather in depth insights through interviews and qualitative surveys capturing diverse perspectives.

Facilitate creative sessions to decluster key takeaways and hold space for constructive dialogue.

Co-design a Strategic Direction together, which lives on paper but mostly within the people.

In addition to this I created a comprehensive visual and did the graphic design to bring the plan to life and present it in an engaging manner. Curious to learn more about the FMCBC’s vision and mission, and how they are planning to take action in the upcoming 5 years? You can learn more about the FMCBC and their Strategic Plan here.
